Knowing what to keep in mind when choosing a Nursing Home

Realize that there are good and bad nursing homes. It will take some time and effort on your part to discover the better facilities. A nursing home is basically an entity that provides skilled nursing care and rehabilitation services to people with illnesses, injuries or functional disabilities. The level of care provided by nursing homes has increased significantly over the past decade. As a result, most nursing homes now focus their attention on rehabilitation, so that their clients can return to their own homes as soon as possible.

Choosing a nursing home can have a great emotional effect on you and your loved ones. It is helpful to plan ahead, visit and compare several nursing homes and make good financial plans early. Here are simple guidelines in making sure you choose the best nursing home for your loved one.

First off, learn as much as possible about the nursing home you are looking at by talking with people that have loved ones in that nursing home, ministers, health professionals such as doctors and Social Workers, long term care ombudsman and nursing home employees.

Second, visit the facility during times when activity level is high such as meal times. Meals are very important to both the medical and social well-being of nursing home patients. Food should be attractive and well prepared, and staff members should assist those who need help eating. Ask patients if they enjoy the food, and observe whether they leave a lot of it uneaten.

Third, observe the residents of the facility. And if possible talk to them. Unhappy residents could indicate their needs are not being met properly. Also, see how the patient’s morale appears to be.

Fourth, voice out any concerns you may have about the facility. Ask about the home staffing and ask the residents if the staff is available when needed. Make sure you are comfortable with the number of residents assigned to each nurse and nurse aide.

Fifth, inspect the license and inspection results of the facility. If the facility has little or no deficiencies then it is most likely a nursing home that wants to get the job done right the first time.

Sixth, make a thorough research about the nursing home using resources on the internet or acquire information with the appropriate state agency.

Lastly, if you are not comfortable with your findings make a second visit. This time do make an appointment and if your visit generates the same feeling then consider looking for another nursing home.

Choosing a nursing home is an emotional decision, yet it is essential to be informed and educated to make the best decision. If you are unhappy with your choice, you can change your mind and move to another. Whether your needs are short-term rehabilitation or long-term care, it will be your or your loved one’s home during your stay.
